Education

As for the earthquake, it was really nothing in comparison to the one in October and the wind… this is Crete and it’s windy!

My Greek hosts have been educating me into the ways of Crete and Greece in general. This required a certain amount of Raki drinking which has brought my fast of nearly two years to an end. The invitation to their table came only shortly before lunchtime. There is no such thing as a firm invitation or similar formality, you just turn up. Having arrived for lunch and eaten well, I was then invited to meet other friends in the evening for supper. In true Greek style we didn’t eat until around 23:00 and I left around 01:00 as I’d had enough. I was out the following morning with the dogs at 07:30 walking on the beach. Last night I was invited to lunch today and have escaped so that I can walk the dogs and have some time on my own. Andy, the Albanian guy has left today to go back to his family for a holiday, however, I suspect that he may not return. Georgia, the manageress, also had a feeling that he might not return so was thinking about his replacement. I suggested that maybe he didn’t actually need to be replaced and that many of his tasks might be reallocated or even contracted out. I said that I might be able to do some of them and we have also discussed ways in which they might, with a little marketing help, attract more customers out of season. My aim is to get free accommodation for myself in exchange for my technical and other expertise. Unlike La Taillade, they seem willing to adopt change and also show a willingness to pay, not necessarily in cash, but in kind, which is fine by me. That way I don’t have to get involved in Greek bureaucracy, at least for the time being, as lots of people come and go on a camping and no one actually can easily keep track of who is where and when. It would appear to have been a very productive couple of days.

Tomorrow will probably be quite wet so I will spend time chilling out and relaxing following the social whirlwind of the past two days.
I understand you have been out somewhere today living the high life I have no doubt.

From your archives, you might be able to tell me the year we went to Tolo. I know it was in the early 1970s but am not entirely certain of the exact year.

So there you have it!
