Oskar’s new collar

For once it was calm in the morning. A relief following several days of strong winds. The sea was still fairly active but not breaking over the rocks.

The dogs were still a bit potty this morning with lots of running about as well as lagging behind. I was well over the rocks before they caught me up.

I started to run, accompanied by Luis and Fido but Obi was conspicuous by his absence as was Princess. At one point, there seemed a distinct lack of dogs. As it turned out, all but Princess and Obi were nearby. Princess, I spotted off into the distance on Grammeno Beach and suspect Obi was not far behind. An unlikely association.

Princess soon reappeared and I finished off my run. I ran 5km today as it seemed like a good idea. All but Obi were present so we set off back to the camping. I was planning my retribution upon Obi when he appeared by the notice boards at the entrance to the Promontory. Saved by the bell!

I went off to Petrakis to buy fruit and met up with Antonis who passed me in his car. We chatted a little and he told me that he will be available to take me to the airport on 20 May and pick me up again on 28 May. It puts a little money his way and gives him a chance to do things in Chania.

The day had started promisingly but clouded over and became quite cool as the morning progressed. Xanthippos was still plugging away at his raking. The camping is looking really good thanks to his hard work. There are parts which still require attention but the bulk of it is raked and looks sensible. How he has the patience, I don’t know. I pointed out that raking up all the little stones will only encourage more to grow but he continued unperturbed.

Finally, the sun came out and the day warmed up. I went for a shower and the water was well warm by then. No need for electrical heating.

I had a support session with Seaford Inter Sport and we tried swapping routers over to find that solved the no Internet problem. I’m unsure why the router worked and then stopped working. I had Nick, the manager, scrambling around unplugging and plugging things in. He knows pretty much what he’s doing.

For the evening walk, I had decided that Oskar should be introduced to the prong collar which I bought for Boris when he used to pull a lot. Boris no longer pulls and is positively mild. Oskar, by comparison, is strong and, when part of a group of eight, turns the walk into a struggle. With the prong collar, Oskar is sweetness and light, simply trotting along with all the others.

There were two cars parked in the Grammeno Beach car park so I released only half of the dogs. There was a family with a young child visiting various parts of the Promontory. I let Obi, Charlie and Boris go followed by Fido and eventually Oskar. Even though he can sometimes be a problem with strangers. Obi rushed off to investigate the people but simply returned and got on with his life once he’d made his introductions. Fido did the same but Charlie seemed disinterested. Unfortunately, the others are too potty to release when others are around as all they want to do is track them down to bark at them. Naturally, all the other dogs cannot resist such an opportunity and some poor soul can find themselves surrounded by five or more barking dogs.

We were back without mishap so everything worked out ok.

I’m sitting outside in the gathering darkness. There is hardly a breath of wind and the sea is the calmest it’s been for several days.

Tonight’s gourmet meal is to clear out all the odds and sods from the fridge. Sounds particularly exciting. I still have plenty of tomatoes and cucumbers.
