Extremely Lazy Sunday

Lots of early activity followed by lots of inactivity. We took the dogs to the Promontory where it was blowing quite hard. I was wearing shorts and a polo shirt and was just about warm enough despite the cool westerly wind.

The morning exercises followed the walk with Ursula amusing the dogs with her floorshow of pilates on the deck. I did a road-run towards Paleochora ending up completing 7.24km in 00:54:18. Hardly a record breaker…

I went further today as it was cooler and it seemed like a good idea. 7.24km is the distance to the filling station and back to Grammeno. Not quite as far as Paleochora.

As I ran back, I saw that the table and umbrella for the run and the cycle event had already been put in position. For a Greek event, it was very sophisticated. There were even some road cones to warn drivers that a large umbrella and table had been located in the middle of the road!

We had tea, fed the dogs etc and then I cycled into Paleochora having sorted out the camera which was malfunctioning the evening before. One of the bar cameras had gone offline for some reason so just needed a restart.

By this time the runners were running and the cyclists were cycling. There were police cars and other emergency vehicles in the centre of town so it was terribly exciting. Petrakis was not busy so I was able to get in and out in no time.

The wind was blowing from the west so the ride back to Grammeno was demanding. Especially now that my gear cable requires changing leaving me in the highest gear. Cyclists went speeding past me and runners plodded towards me. There were three different runs: 5km, 10km and 21km. All started from the same location in Paleochora and all took the same westerly route turning back in different places for the competitors to complete the required distance. Unlike me, the wind was with them on the return leg.

Breakfast followed and then chatting with Fanis, Eleni and Dimitra, who left around midday to return to Chania and then with Silvia on the beach. She was there despite the wind and was the only person brave enough to resist the wind and stinging sand.

The camping was animated with children playing and adults going about their business The restaurant appears to have been busy and Dimitris has been on the go all day serving drinks, snacks and coffees.

Ursula produced a mushroom and rice dish this evening which was delicious and interesting. It contained two important ingredients. Mushrooms and onions.
