Promontory encounters

OddJob was getting noisy at 04:00 as he was keen to get out to exercise his new-found freedom. I finally gave in at 04:25 and set the Early Walk procedure in motion. There was a beautiful sky so we were able to enjoy the early morning stars and the odd planet. The dogs were not particularly active and all bar Obi and Princess were off and free.

After the morning run/pilates/shower/tea and visit to Paleochora we had breakfast together with Luis to entertain us. I needed to answer a few emails so went back to my computer once I’d finished eating. Ursula had been baking cakes and had given me a piece to try. It was very yummy, as expected.

The morning drifted into the afternoon with little action on my part. After the previous busy days, I wasn’t too unhappy to have little to do.

Maria emailed me to say that all the remaining staff were going out of the camping, so I was in charge. I used the time to configure the software which allows me to view the security cameras. My efforts in the Spring and early summer were mostly aimed at getting the cameras in position and set up, more than optimising the software. For the winter, I need to put up a couple more cameras in strategic locations to enable me to monitor the camping from the comfort of my van. This will focus my attention on finishing the job. Far easier than having to wander the camping to track people down or to see why Georgia’s dogs are barking. It seems likely that Πέντε will be looked after in Chania this winter and not have to endure life in her chilly kennel. I noticed that both she and Mickey were looking ‘well-nourished’ despite the vet’s suggestion that they are overweight. At least they were being kept on a lead, not allowed to wander the camping at will. They are now visitors to the camping rather than inmates.

Ursula provided tea and more cake when they returned from their recce of Azogires in anticipation of the Family Invasion this Sunday. At this point in time, the weather is not looking that favourable for next week so a backup plan might be a good idea. There is still plenty of time for the weather to change though. It is increasingly unstable as October progresses.

The evening walk was different from the norm. Cars were parked in the Beach car park so I guessed there might be someone about. As it turned out, a couple of German ladies were walking back towards their car. One of whom was fearful of dogs. I spent time chatting to them and also hoping that the interaction would benefit the dogophobe. By the time we’d finished chatting, Ursula had been to the end of the Promontory to discover a couple wandering the rocks. She’d only let OddJob and Heidi go before she’d discovered the couple. Ursula decided to come back to find me and we crossed paths quite soon. She explained about the couple but said they’d probably gone. I let the other dogs go at which point Pea discovered the couple not far away. Ursula, by this time, was heading back to Grammeno with all but OddJob who she felt might require a little more exercise. The couple were not concerned by the dogs. He was born in Brighton and went to the Old Grammar School in Lewes. They now live in Hurstpierpoint. He is one year older than me.

We walked back together towards the car park as, by now, it was getting dark. We parted and I returned to the camping to find that Ursula had prepared the food for the dogs and put hers into their houses.

She then left to finish off the preparation of our food which we ate under the canopy. It was getting late (21:15) and we’d finished our meal so the consensus was that it was getting towards bedtime. Tony, Ursula and Heidi left for their cabin and I finished off this blog. I shall be going to my bed quite soon but know that writing a blog while in bed is a recipe for disaster. No sooner do you start than you fall asleep!
