Loafing in the sun

A man accosted us as we made our way back from the Early Walk. A coastguard vehicle drew up and a man lowered the passenger window and started to speak to me. It was hard to make out what he was saying for three reasons: Skinny was making silly noises close to me, the clatter of the engine drowned his voice which was speaking Greek. We might have had a fighting chance if the Skinny and the engine were not present but he got out of his vehicle and came over to speak to me. He reminded me that he’d accosted me on a previous occasion to take pictures of the dogs as I was going out for the Evening Walk one day in the summer. Not last summer but a previous one. He wanted to let me have a photo but hadn’t known where to contact me. I explained that I lived in the camping and that one of his colleagues had helped Antonis with some work for me. He knew exactly who I was talking about and could understand that I might not connect the Hellenic Coastguard with the guy who took some photos one summer evening.

I put the dogs into the van, fed the cats and Isabella then went for a ride to Krios on my bike. I met a [German] guy with a couple of dogs who I’ve seen about on a number of occasions. This time, I stopped and we had a chat about dogs, walking and where we live. He knows that I live in Grammeno and I sort of knew he had a caravan at the foot of the mountains somewhere. He was very proud of the fact that he didn’t have a house and was perhaps unimpressed that I too live in a van. I made friends with his dogs: a mother and son, then continued on to the bakery to pick up a pastry for Tony.

Ursula, to my surprise, was up when I went to take the pastry to Tony. She mentioned the loo had no water which we later discovered was because someone had accidentally turned off the water to T2 and T3. I now know what all of those valves control now thanks to Xanthippos who was painting the new building. We chatted a while and then I went to get some breakfast but was waylaid by Bona, the cleaner who needed keys to the cabins. I happened to have a set as I opened them all up a couple of days previously. She wanted to check they were all ready to receive guests so I left her to it. Breakfast occurred nearer to lunchtime than breakfast time.

Later, Ursula came up to see the dogs and to meet Isabella. As usual, Isabella was extremely reluctant to meet her and didn’t wish to meet anyone new. Between her and the others, Ursula received a good licking and lots of fuss. Ursula then took Tony out for a meal in Paleochora and I did a bit of very important resting in my chair outside on the decking in the sun. The clouds eventually blotted out the sun at which time to got a shower and inspected Xanthippos’ work whilst making approving noises. I put a load of washing in the machine and then joined Ursula and Tony for a cup of tea.

The dogs were becoming more raucous so I took them for the Evening Walk as by this time, the evening was well advanced. It was almost dark as we crossed the rocks and seriously so as we came back over the field. They are now fed, the washing hung up and hopefully, my food is cooked. It is rather later than I would have liked it to be but with my late brunch, my stomach was not pushing me on.
