Gearing up for the weekend

There has not been a constant stream of vehicles lined up at the reception office but there have been arrivals. Customers wandering through the bar area and to the bar. I can see there are more devices attached to the WiFi network of which there are 23 near the WiFi access point in the bar. The trend this year has been very quiet during the week but busy over the weekends. I don’t have much idea how many are dining in the restaurant as I have better things to do than watch the CCTV cameras in the evening. Since we’re now past the halfway point in July, there is only about one month left of the highest point of the season to go. Once past 15 August, the busiest season is over for the weekdays but livening up at weekends.

The Elephants woke me at 04:15 so I was out of bed before the alarm to get ready. As a result, we were back from the first walk before it was properly light. An unfortunate sign of things to come as it is now nearly one month since the summer solstice. The walk was reasonably energetic as it was cooler. Kostas’ torch was to been seen in the distance as he gathered salt on the rocks. Obi came round with Skinny and Isabella as Fido has been relegated to the parked team due to general lethargy and finding too many excuses to stop. Obi likes a bit of a sniff about as any respectable dog would tell you but Fido stops too often and constantly drags behind. He’s usually the first to complain if he feels left behind but he make little noise if at all when I leave him with the others. The four of us kept a good pace going which continued all the way back to the camping.

The second walk was underway just after 06:00 by which time it was light. Other than a guy sitting watching the sea from his pickup, there was no one about. We descended to the shoreline quickly and briskly walked along Alonáki Beach to Plakaki Hotel and thence as far as we could go. Both Skinny and Isabella were lively today so enjoyed a good amount of larking about. Skinny is on a long lead with me on the other end. At one point he accelerated off causing me to measure my length in the shingle. I protested but, interestingly, it was Luis who came rushing up to me whilst Skinny and Isabella simply stood benignly together. Later, during another Skinny – Isabella exchange, not looking where she was going, she ran straight into my legs. Now that she’s no longer a little puppy, it was a painful experience for me however she just carried on as normal even though she’d contacted my shins at high speed. I staggered on reminding myself to give Skinny longer lead length when the two of them are playing so that I can keep well out of range!

I went for a pleasant swim after the walk with only one other swimmer which I think was Maria. Apparently, she is aiming to go in the sea each morning on a regular basis as asked me what my morning activity program consisted of. I washed off the salty water and headed off to Petrakis as I only bought a few items the previous day. One thing was chicken quarters for the Doggy Dinners of which there was only one bag in the freezer. I notice they have other packs of animal so may branch out on another occasion. I bought mainly fruit and veg but now have enough for quite a while.

Work on the road is progressing well with edging on both sides of the majority of the section from Plakaki Hotel to the rocky outcrop nearing completion. There was plenty of activity as I passed at around 08:15 as I picked my way amongst the machines and followed the road grader until I found an opportunity to pass it safely. They are beginning to build up the road surface and compact it using a very large roller. If things continue in this fashion I reckon the tarmacking machine might return to complete another section. I use the word ‘complete’ in the loosest possible way as there is still the overhanging section to deal with as well as drainage work and the pedestrian/cycle path. Still plenty for the next ten years or so.

I fed the dogs, prepared my breakfast and put away the shopping before going to sit down for a well-deserved rest. The dogs were now sleeping as it was warm and sunny so it was wonderfully quiet for a while. I profited to answer a couple of outstanding emails and check on some other IT related items.

Last night I watched the episode of The Crown which portrayed Charles’ Investiture as Prince of Wales and the term spent at Aberystwyth University to endear him to the Welsh People. It would seem that, overall, he achieved the aim although there was a bit of a rocky start. The investiture took place in July 1969 eleven years after he was made Prince. I remember the investiture taking place and possibly even the address he gave in Welsh. There was some controversy as Charles used the opportunity to add some of his own feeling to the text so he’s portrayed as being told off by mummy once the speech had been translated. Shutting the door…

Other than a few IT related activities, the day has been quite unproductive other than to sweep and mop the van floor.

A protest group has just reminded me that it’s Doggy Dinner time and I should get on with it!
