RIP Maureen Franks

Mo died this afternoon in the company of Eleanor and Sophie just twelve days after the man she’d loved for over seventy years. When you build a life together as they did I cannot imagine what it must be like without the other half. Mo lived a long life and enjoyed good health almost until the end. May they find happiness together for eternity.

The initial purpose of this blog was to keep Mo and Jim informed of my life in Sunny Crete. For a while after my arrival in Crete, we’d been sending emails back and forth but increasingly communications were getting muddled and continuity was difficult. I decided to write a daily blog which could be read by both parents independently. This has continued for several years but is now technically redundant.

Our morning walks went according to plan following the revised pattern of late. I noticed the strong easterly wind had blown lots of plastic rubbish onto Alonáki Beach as we walked towards Plakaki so I made a mental note to pick it up on the way back. Once both hands were full with collapsed plastic bottles, I decided to collect the bag kept under three large stones behind the public toilets in the car beach park. I’d repurposed a plastic container so emptied that and set off back up the beach to pick up the remainder. There were some larger objects which I had to carry separately but I picked up the majority so I felt the beach looked tidier following my efforts.

It was gratifying to see that the dogs stayed nearby as I carried out my litter-pick not using the opportunity to go chase the sheep in the next field or disappear for a wander elsewhere.

Time was getting on so we completed our second walk of the Promontory and returned to the camping for breakfast. I fed the dogs before getting on with my own. I had the DDs to see to as well as bake the bread left rising during the night.

The silicone bread tin doesn’t really hold the shape too well. I’ve not tested the bread yet.

The sun was now shining so I was able to enjoy my breakfast in its warmth. I watched a couple of interesting YouTube videos and drifted off for a while.

It was a generally quiet day so I walked down to the beach and chatted to Alma and the mother of the young children after I dropped off their package which arrived whilst they were away.

I went back to deal with the DD’s when I received a phone call from Terry.

The remainder of the day became a mixture of calls, texts and emails. We went for our walk around 18:00 and it was great just to stand on the rocks listening to the waves crashing on the rocks reflecting on the lives of our parents. It was dark and a little wild. The dogs were very patient!

It was 18C when we left around 07:00. The 0.5mm rain fell a short while ago
