The BIG send-off

It was a lot cooler once the sun went down yesterday evening so I didn’t need much convincing to put on the heater once the temperature dropped to 18℃. I was quite cold having spoken to Janne and Erica at some length. I’d also yet to have my supper as our conversation was so long. Erica wanted to know that the cats were all pining for her so I assured her they were. I excited myself before bedtime with an episode from Spooks: all about assassinating a foreign president attending an important conference in the UK.

We had a lie-in today because it was raining. Isabella came to get me up but I explained that I wasn’t up for wandering around in the cold and dark in the rain. As you can imagine, she understood immediately and asked to be let out for a pee. I opened the door for her then retired back to my pit to await a break in the rain.

It had stopped for a while so I expected it’d be ok to get up so got dressed and went outside. It began to rain again so I wasted time and fed the pussies.

Once we found a less wet interval, we set off madly across the field towards the Promontory. There were loads of grey and black clouds which I could see as we were out later and it was light. On other days I have to just guess or look for stars.

We’d not gone far when it started to rain once more so we sheltered in the large cave with the collapsed roof which is on the eastern side of the Promontory. After a few minutes, the rain stopped so we carried on and over the rocks.

The sky was a mixture of speedy grey and black clouds so it was difficult to predict the next shower. Like the day before, I felt it better to not go far from base so stuck to the Promontory where we wandered around aimlessly exploring. The dogs appear pretty happy to do this finding plenty to sniff. Isabella races around madly kicking up sand high into the air and being bouncy with Charlie, Oskar or Skinny. I’m delighted for her to expend her energy as quickly as possible as I’d prefer her to leave it on the Promontory than bring it back to the camping as she can be annoying enough anyway.

The sky didn’t look too encouraging so we headed back to the cave whereupon there was a thunderclap to the south and Skinny was in the cave hiding. Skinny, like Boris, is not a fan of thunder. There was more rain for a few moments so I waited and the dogs explored the cave.

Once it stopped, we made a hasty dash for the camping as I felt sure it would only be a matter of time before the next downpour. We arrived back dry so I fed the dogs as it was well past 09:00.

I needed to make some Doggy Dinners which I started as I made my breakfast. By this time, the sun put in an appearance so the dogs were on the enclosed decking enjoying the warmth. Later, they were all outside as the sun was quite warm. With the carobs on my side topped as well as those on Janne and Erica’s side cut down to roof height, my decking is in full sun until around 15:00 when it goes behind the large carob next to the storeroom. That’s on my list.

I got the DDs into the Pot early on and even managed to get them processed in good time too. Part of my supper and doggy rice is in there now. Like that, it will be ready when we come back from walking and I can continue with the second part of mine.

The remainder of the day has been taken up with small tasks with a distinct lack of external interruption. The only IT activity involved restarting a switch in the office as one of the WiFi access points and gone into a decline and required a reboot.

The sun has fully charged the battery despite all the cooking. This is a good thing as it’s going to be cold again this evening so I’ll need some heat. I prefer to use solar-derived electricity than burn loads of gas.

It’s chilly around my knees as the sun has gone behind the clouds and is very near to setting anyway. The dogs realise it’s time to go for their evening walk so are not letting me forget.

The people on the beach just now might have been a little surprised when Skinny and Isabella arrived in the vanguard of the others. At 18:00, just before dark, I don’t expect to find anyone about so let the dogs race of willy-nilly. There was plenty of horseplay but they pretty much ignored the people, one of whom was fishing.

As we walked down the Promontory we passed a man talking on his phone. The dogs were mostly disinterested in him too. Except for Obi who chose to bark at him until I advised him to shut up.

As we returned, a car was parked in the beach car park. I don’t know what’s got into everyone today!

We had a good walk. The dogs amused themselves and followed me without any intervention on my part which is the main thing. We were all together as we crossed the fence into the field however Charlie found himself the non-dinner side of the gate but made me aware of his presence.

Later this evening we’re having a debrief after the Big Sendoff today. Denise was impressed as the cortège progressed slowly up School Hill with the funeral director walking in front of the hearse. Very traditional! I hope the horses had black plumes on their heads…

Despite the sun, the top temperature was only 15.8℃. It will be cold tonight if there are few clouds as the ground it wet after 5.3mm rain.
