Skinny goes hungry

The wind kept us company for most of the night so it was an unwelcoming morning which encouraged me to stay in bed until 06:35. There were a few drops of rain very early on however it was great not to have to go out to find everything wet first thing in the morning.

Dawn was breaking as we crossed the field and headed for the Promontory. There were some interesting clouds lurking about but the forecast reckoned there was only a 24% chance of precipitation so much better than the previous days.

The wind made it quite chilly so I was eager to keep everyone moving over the rocks and back onto the beach for a walk towards Plakaki. The recent rain meant the river was operational so our way was blocked unless I fancied getting my feet wet. Strangely, I didn’t…

Obi swam across to the other side, Charlie waded and the bigger dogs simply walked through the water. I left them to mooch around in and around the water for a few minutes but it was getting cold and I was considering going shopping.

Back down Alonáki Beach and a very brisk tour of the Promontory before taking the dogs back to the van and putting them inside to listen to some music.

I got on my bike and cycled into Paleochora for some groceries. It was around 08:45 but the store was quiet. I stocked up on fruit and vegetables then did a quick trip around for anything else I could think of without overloading my bike bags. Everyone agreed that the weather was chilly.

Riding back was easier as the wind was more favourable. The men were working on the road beneath the previously overhanging rock and the machine which levels the surface was passing the huge roller. There was a slight delay and we continued. I noticed a section of the road had been dug up presumably due to a problem with one of the many streams that run off the mountains and cross the road before falling into the sea.

I released the dogs once I’d brought in the shopping then fed them before putting away the purchases and getting my breakfast ready.

I had been in two minds whether to go shopping as it was so cold. The sun had made the morning that much more pleasant and the wind conveniently dropped. It definitely wasn’t swimming weather as far as I was concerned.

After my breakfast, I decided I needed to tackle the Raspberry Pi problem. Following some more research, I discovered a possible reason why I was unable to access the old Pi from the network even though the Pi can access the network as well as the Internet.

The upshot was that I’ve swapped the old Pi for the Pi4 which has the license to run the software which collects data from the solar setup. This data helps me get a better understanding of how long it takes to charge up the battery and gives an indicator as to the amount of power remaining. I just need for someone to provide helpful information as to how I can get around the problem with the new Pi4 or send it back. So far, it seems that the old Pi is able to act as the media computer for the time being at least.

Other highlights included putting washing in for Nikos and wandering around the site looking for the other brother (cat) as well as talking to the Estonians. Alma said she’d heard from Stephanie that her test results were not encouraging as she has a hereditary problem with Aortic arch aneurysms. In short, the blood vessel leading to the heart bursts so you drop down dead. Anyway, I found the pussy which I’d not seen around for a few days. Usually, he’s lurking ready to pounce on me whenever I show my face in the camping.

There have been a few, small IT events during the day but nothing extraordinary.

Following my absence from the van, I noticed that Skinny was not present. It was nearly time to take the dogs so I went for a shower before getting them ready. He was not to be seen nearby and I’d not run into him when I was walking around the camping earlier so we went without him. On previous occasions, he suddenly appeared during the walk and joined in but not this time.

I fed the dogs as soon as we were back and gave the bulk of Skinny’s share to Isabella who, as you can imagine, was delighted. Skinny eventually appeared just as I was getting the dogs into the van and Charlie was chasing the last few grains of rice around his bowl.

Skinny probably had expectations that I was about to suddenly produce a full bowl of food for him however nothing could be further from reality. He might be more inclined to either not do a disappearing trick or at least turn up in time for grub.

Not a particularly chilly day once the wind quietened thanks to all the sunshine which also charged the battery. It seems that everyone ignored yesterday remaining in their respective vans to keep warm and out of the horrible day. Only those of us with dogs braved the elements.
