Early Visitor

Fido and Charlie needed to pee at 03:55 which is as good a time as any. I let them out with strict instructions to be quick which they were. Only when Charlie was on his way back in did I hear a single bark from the field gate signifying the arrival of The Rug. I quickly rushed out to let her in as it was only around 7ºC. She declined to come into the van after drinking around 400 litres of water from the massive bowl on the decking. She remained silently under the awning until we went out later on.

I couldn’t force myself out of bed at 04:45 so set a thirty-minute timer which I ignored too. I waited until it was getting light before rousing the crew and setting off for the Early Walk. The two girlies amused each other and I stuffed my hands into my pockets so cold was the wind. I had a hat and two hoods but was still cold. A small ship cowered in the bay in the lee of the mountains. Along the beach we passed they guy who comes to photograph the sunrise. He was sitting in his pickup with the window rolled down. We exchanged greetings and I hastened onwards against the strong, cold, northerly wind. Charlie, Isabella and Skinny crossed the river whilst The Rug just bulldozed her way across the deepest section becoming one very wet dog.

The wind pushed us all back down the beach to the Promontory where we went round again before returning to the van. I put the dogs in and then took the two crazies and the ball for another walk around the Promontory. This time, it was still windy but the sunshine helped to warm things up. I fed the dogs and then myself spending much of the morning doing very little other than putting a wash on for Catherine, the French lady with the Skinny look-alike. I directed her to the chemist for the doggy medications she asked about.

The remaining Swiss couple also wanted the washing machine so their load went in later. There wasn’t much going on in the camping other than Michaelis coming later to saw up some firewood from his personal stock. It was generally windy most of the day and cold when in an unsheltered location out of the sun.

I prepared doggy food and extra rice for our guest before venturing outside once more for a walk. It was still very windy and cold so our walk was brisk to say the least. Rug was picked up as we were about to cross into the field. Apparently, her master had been in Chania and returned home to find her absent. Presumably he went to the camping, discovered we were out so surmised we were walking.

It’s currently 8ºC that feels like 5ºC which I’m happy to accept. All the dogs are in except Skinny who was polishing when I closed the door. I expect he’ll be eager to join us inside where it’s considerably warmer.

Cold and windy then sunny and slightly less windy. The forecast is talking about 17ºC from Friday onwards. We have some unsettled times ahead mostly centred around Tuesday and Wednesday. Then it starts to get warmer, hopefully.
