Hottest Day

There were three arrivals in the evening, the last, a Swiss family, as it was getting dark. Why do people turn up so late in the day?

It was 20ºC when I walked out onto the decking however the wind made it feel cooler. I was wearing summer shorts so no pockets and shorter shorts. It was very dark as the moon was behind a cloud and coming near to the end of this cycle. There was quite a lot of cloud so few stars. That didn’t stop the little chirpy insects from performing, another indication of how warm it was. We performed as usual then went back to the van. I rode into Paleochora to the bakers for some bread for me and a spinach pie for Bona.

I knew I had at least one departure so didn’t waste too much time in getting back. I released and fed the dogs then made tea before wandering into the camping. The English couple, Graham and Mary, were planning to leave but had such a good meal at Grammeno Restaurant they decided to postpone their departure. The Swiss couple, who also plan to leave tomorrow, will visit Manolis at his restaurant this evening. I chatted to the customers a little then went to finish my tea.

The Swiss called to used the washing machine however the weather’s a little variable at present so they may have difficulty getting it dry today.

Meanwhile, Bona called to say a couple had entered the camping uninvited and set up their van on one of the bays. I went to meet them and may have appeared less than welcoming. They were old folk, and the woman played the ‘old folk’ card so I began to be nice to them. They had a limited knowledge of English but we got by. They were planning to drive to Elafonissi vie the E4 or over the mountains so I suggested an alternative. They talked about the Samaria Gorge too. The husband was born in 1940 so they were getting on a little.

I took the wash back to the Swiss and passed a message to Gabi from the German girls who were next to them yesterday. They’d seen the little dog which seems to spend most of its time within its kennel in quite a confined run. The couple had continued on their way east earlier in the day having walked from Elafonissi yesterday.

I fitted up some hooks to hold up the piece of groundsheet which is attracted to the fence and covers my bike. I can now keep the bottom of the sheet off the ground making it easier to cover the bike. In a mad moment, I even cleared up some tools and vacuumed the carpet for the first time in a long while. I’d quite forgotten what colour it is!

There were a few spots of rain and a clap of thunder early evening but the forecast had predicted this. Otherwise, the day started windy then sunny and warm.

I have my penultimate trip to the dentist tomorrow midday so am pleased the weather will stay dry. It’s been a generally lacklustre day and I’ve felt unmotivated and a little fatigued.

It was warmer than the day before despite the varied conditions. Only by 0.1ºC however. Tomorrow may be cooler but continuing variable.
