Wednesday

I took another trip to Grantchester where there was an interesting murder to solve involving domestic violets and a convent. I’ll say no more. This was followed by an equally interesting BBC episode by a woman scientist who traces the development of everyday technology. She was looking at the electronic payment card in the first episode, the development of GPS and food delivery services in this episode and Alexa will be the next one. These episodes are quite detailed. I didn’t know that Sputnik was one of the reasons for the development of GPS as the US needed to know where Sputnik was at all times. The GPS angle was part of the food delivery industry’s growth due to the ability to track their delivery technicians and ensure they found the address as quickly as possible. There was also a Quick Look at Joe 90 which I don’t recall seeing the first time around. Considering its age, it holds up quite well.

The morning was warm but breezy. The sea was from the southwest to begin with but turned later to the southeast. Crossing the rocks and the causeway wasn’t too difficult although I wasn’t paying attention later and got a good soaking as a wave struck a nearby rock. I was almost dry by the time we were back.

There was something interesting as all the dogs disappeared leaving me all on my own. They reappeared as we walked to Azzuro and most were present by the time we arrived. Even Luis! We completed the first walk without any barking from the two Woolley Mammoths and all bar Oskar arrived back together. Skinny loitered outside so he could participate in the second walk.

I fed Moggy and we set off into the darkness as there were some dark foreboding clouds to the north and east. We walked to Azzuro once more but with me carrying the ball for a change. Isabella was most attentive.

The sea was quite active but Isabella seemed just as keen as ever to go into it despite the waves and the swell. Antonis was fishing on the rocks by the Big Beach although I couldn’t make out it was him until I was nearer. He was preparing his rods and lines so Skinny went to ‘help’ to Antonis’ dismay. We chatted a while and I later learned there are more lures snagged on the rocks but the same number of fish in the sea.

I rode to Paleochora to buy bread and visit Petrakis. I took out a mortgage for some Broccoli at a mere 4€/kg as well as some fresh carrots. Fresh means not stored in the fridge beforehand and with stalks and leaves. The broccoli stalk, together with the one from the other day will form part of tomorrow’s DDs. I’ve been on a bit of a broccoli-fest recently.

My ride back was very long as I became involved in a chat with a friend so was late arriving at the roadworks. I’d lost track of time so had to wait until 09:50 for the road to open. During the thirty-five minute delay, I admired the sea from a nearby rock, watched a huge bolder fall from the construction site and chatted to Xanthippos who seemed very relaxed about being held up. He tells me CBV will soon be attached to the community sewage system once the guy comes to make the final connections. I finally arrived at the camping around 10:05.

I fed dogs, made tea and put on a washing machine for the couple who arrived yesterday. Another couple arrived and are now parked up by the Common Room. They have had two washes as they’d started to recycle their clothing. But now, everything is clean and drying. Let’s hope it stays fine during the night.

A couple of Canadian touring cyclists were looking around the camping as I went to change washing machine loads. They are now in Bay 5 under the trees. The woman is not feeling too go so wants a lift to Omalos tomorrow. I contacted Antonis who suggested the taxi company next to the bus station as they have a van. She has since arranged this for tomorrow but her partner will ride.

Other activities included falling asleep when it was sunny and messing around with Barbara’s web sites. In between trips to the laundry and seeing in the arrivals.

It’s now dark, my broccoli. Potatoes, carrots and frozen peas are cooked so time to go in to enjoy them.

A mild and sunny day with a little wind most of the day. It was warmer than yesterday but it didn’t rain as predicted. Tomorrow and Friday should be about the same although Saturday is still looking wet.
