Sunday

I watched another science episode to discover how Alexa, and most of the others, work. Apparently, Mr Bezos doodled out a little sketch and then told his guys to make it happen. And so Alexa was born. Further entertainment with BBT and then YouTube. Having not had any adverts on C4, I now seem to be getting some.

I was early to bed as it was cold and blowy outside so I decided it might be the best choice. At least I managed to turn everything off before going to sleep. I also managed to add a blanket as it was less than tropical in the night.

I awoke to the sound of rain and the alarm. I snoozed the alarm several times then examined the forecast and the satellite map before leaping out of bed.

There was a meaningful wind and it was not very warm. I might have been better with another layer. I could see lightning to the south so carefully tracked its progress.

The sea was breaking over the rocks and the lagoon was as full as I’ve seen it in a long time. The sea was even coming over on the east side as I could see from where the sand had been washed away. We didn’t cross the rocks as the causeway would have been very difficult and it was windy. We contented ourselves with walking down the west side but crossed over by the big rock to be in the lee of the promontory.

Raindrops started to fall so I decided to abandon any thoughts of going to Azzuro and returned to the van where we all went back to sleep until around 06:45 when we came out again. This time direction Azzuro.

The sea had been busily removing many of the stones from Alonáki Beach leaving it quite flat. The river was trying to run into the sea but the sea seemed more interested in reversing the roles as we tried to continue to Azzuro. Oskar found himself swimming after being swept off his feet by a wave from the beach. Luis swam as did Obi. But they’re used to it anyway. I just kept walking halfway up my shins in the water at the deepest point where the river had gouged and channel to the sea.

We reached Azzuro despite the carcass which had been deposited much further up the beach by the sea. I gathered them up to avoid temptation and we walked back again. This time, we were spared having to deal with the sea and the river.

We walked the beach back to Grammeno Beach where Betty was exercising Lucy with a ball. We waved and some of the dogs went to see Betty.

We walked the Promontory missing out the rocks and returned to the van once more. I’d had enough by now even though the girls had no walk on their own.

I decided to check the shower water temperature for the main bathroom to discover it was about 25ºC so I restarted the boiler a couple of times to get it running. Water in the flue as usual. I reset the RCD in the breaker panel by the entrance to the men’s bathroom so there was power on the Bays and the Lamp Pole.

I thought I’d risk riding between the showers to get some bread in Paleochora. After a brief study of the clouds, I set off soon to be bathed in sunshine. Together with the strong, following wind, it was almost pleasant going in.

I got a couple of loaves and hastened back as I could see clouds in the distance. I used some help to speed up the journey as I was now against quite a strong wind. I considered stopping at the little beach bar but kept going, avoiding the pebbles on the cycleway and carriageway spat out by the sea. Earlier, a JCB had cleared debris which had been washed down during the night. There was little rain after midnight mostly before from around seven onward. A total of 14.2mm in all for Saturday.

I delivered bread to Lucy and Kevin and came back to feed the dogs.

I made my second cup of tea, the first I enjoyed whilst preparing the DDs which were now mostly cooked.

It wasn’t really sitting around weather as the wind was cold and there were occasional showers. I had different FF-W (Furry Foot-Warmers) ranging from Sasha, Luis and then Maya, who has a very soft coat. I didn’t really do anything constructive other than make and cook food for myself later, clean the kitchen sink and other minor cleaning activities.

I played with the AC and put it on to heat the van interior. It struggled a little with the door open, for obvious reasons. Closing the door made a lot of difference. Most dogs were inside enjoying the warmth so I processed the DDs and put their rice on to cook. I fiddled with the AC controls and put down some more rodent deterrent as we appear to have a new infiltrator.

Showers have continued throughout the day, sometimes quite heavy. It was much cooler, even cooler than a week ago, to my surprise! The sea has been as far as the trees in front of the camping so the customers are beginning to get a taste of wintertime. Those in vans are probably more comfortable than the tent dwellers.

Cold, wet and windy with persistent showers of which some were heavy. More rain is forecast for the night. Tuesday and Wednesday also show signs of impending dampness. The evening will be breezy but tomorrow should settle down and be mostly calm.
