Hottest Day

Hetty was investigating the disappearance of the mayor’s daughter, a simple girl who went off with one of her admirers, an equally simple man who worked as a municipal hygiene operative. They went off in search of a resort hotel but wound up in an old farmhouse. As usual, Hetty did her research and deduction so everything turned out just fine. I then watched a documentary about mine clearance in Ukraine. Some of the farmers, who cannot wait for the professionals, have rigged up robot mine clearance devices using farm equipment. Quite ingenious I thought. There are so many mines, laid by both sides, that it will take years to make them safe. The farmers don’t have years…

My brain seems to want to get up earlier even though we’re still getting up at the same time as last week. Our walks were mostly unremarkable so I came back with a similar number of dogs with which I left.

I paid a visit to Petrakis for some DDs shopping and then rode back in the sunshine. There were the DDs to finish off which I did once the dogs were fed. I made tea before sitting down when I remembered some punters wanted the machine and there was loads to be washed. The punters decided they didn’t have enough for the machine so I filled it up with the sheets from the weekend lettings.

I took money from two departees, of which one will return after they meet up with their daughter. An Austrian couple who appear to have enjoyed their stay at Grammeno.

There were several calls from customers wishing to book for the summer. I directed them to Maria. I’m sure I did other useful things but seem to have spent a lot of the day standing or wandering the camping.

There was one arrival, an extended family who have taken Ξ7 and paid for three nights. I rolled the tent up into the cabin fee as Georgia had just given me the April prices which were more than Maria had given them. I had to get out of the problem somehow. Another guy, currently staying at Paleochora camping, looked at the camping but I have a feeling he’s better off in Paleochora so won’t stay.

A young lady from Athens is coming to work at Elafonissi but wants to stay at Grammeno for the whole summer. I explained it would be prohibitively expensive as she’d pay full price. She wants to stay for May to give her time to find some other accommodation. There were others… Speaking English can put them off sometimes but most persist… I even had a cold-caller from Athens which I palmed off to Georgia.

The people whose mother lives in Paleochora are leaving so they paid having stayed a reasonable time. They stayed ‘one month’ as it’s cheaper that way as it will save them money compared to the standard rate. Better to give them a reason to come back next time.

I precessed the DDs and have cooked for myself. It’s ready so I’d better eat it.

The hottest day of the month. Unsurprising really… But also the hottest of the year.
