Where is Crete?

Relative positions of Crete and Cyprus. Accepted that Cyprus is Greek, except for the Turkish part – although the Greeks would be only too delighted for the Turks to Bu@@er off as they had enough of them during the Ottoman Empire.

Anyway, I’m in Crete not Cyprus. Hardly any Turks here and no British peacekeeping forces although there is a US NSA  base (Naval Support Activity) here in Souda Bay. This might be a comfort or not depending on whether the base is considered a target or something the US might defend in case of conflict. The Hellenic airforce pop over the mountains periodically to wake us all up by flying low along the coast in their nice little fighters. Incidentally, did you know that Greece’s military expenditure is 2.5% GDP the same as UK?

Crete is not that far from North Africa which is why we were keen to hang onto it in 1941 as we had one or two things going on in North Africa at the time and needed to send stuff to Alexandria.
Nevertheless, we continued to annoy the Germans there until the war ended, and can still annoy them now as there are plenty living on the island.

As you can see, I was amusing myself earlier with an annotation tool.
It is nice today again. 18C is the highest so far – slightly cooler than yesterday.

My man, Addie, the Albanian guy who works on the camping, tells me he is going back to Albania to his family. He is fed up being in Greece.
There it is so far for today.
