Swimming Pool

For some extraordinary reason, the maggots occupying the sun beds on Alonaki Beach were not enamoured by an early morning visit from Skinny and Isabella. The idea of either of them sniffing around in the darkness might be off-putting to some. I summoned both and marched off towards the end of the Promontory.

Some cars adorned the beach car park so I was on the lookout for FreeLoaders which we found in due course. It was around 26C and there was little wind only some cooler air from the sea. Despite the warmth and the lack of enthusiasm, we made the course avoiding the maggots as we went back up Alonaki Beach. I felt it only fair.

It didn’t quite work out that way when we returned a little while later so the maggots were able to see all of the dogs as they filed past. The occupants of the two dome tents installed on the Big Beach stirred as we came past. Hardly surprising since Isabella had very recently been practicing her barking on Charlie.

Kostas was collecting salt in the distance and men were fishing in boats nearby. The sea was very calm so I was looking forward to getting into it.

I deposited the dogs in the van and went for a swim. On my return, I put the Doggy Dinners into the pot to cook in my absence. I didn’t do anything too adventurous this morning as it was hot. I went to visit the PAWS puppies instead.

The place appeared deserted from above so it was only when I ventured down the bank from the road that I was mobbed by around a dozen puppies.

Ankle-biters testing their teeth

I was definitely popular so they took it in turns to test their teeth on my feet and ankles. I eventually sat down on a conveniently located upturned crate as there was a lot of petting and tummy scratching required. Ursula had alerted me to a FaceBook post that a load of puppies had been rescued. Some were older than others who were still quite immature. As I left, they followed me up the bank and made pathetic noises as I rode off towards the centre.

I went back to the camping then into the sea to cool off after my undemanding ride. The sea was calm and Manos was packing up after his fishing. He was there when I came to swim the first time around 07:20. Time was moving on so I didn’t stay in that long as the dogs would have been cooking nicely in the van.

The van now has all of the windows open as well as the roof light. This means that the dogs can look out and can also hear when I come back from my ride giving Luis the opportunity of a little bark.

I put on a towel, released the dogs and fed them before making a cup of tea and sitting down for a rest. It didn’t take long to start feeling hot again.

The Doggy Dinners cooked but I was feeling lethargic so they waited until later to be processed. I eventually found the energy to process them. I’m afraid to say that the day was otherwise somewhat inactive.

I have cleaned and filled the bath I used to leave in the SDC which Minnie so liked to swim in. It was intended for doggy drinking or dunking but became quickly disgusting with all the sand from feet and leaves from the nearby carobs. Not that they were in any way deterred. As the dogs are now usually free to roam at will, I’ve put the bath on the decking so that it can act as a giant water bowl if nothing else. Only Isabella has drunk from it so far.

Today has been warm and sunny with a high of 36.6C at 16:09. Not as warm as 24th but still hot enough. There has been little breeze only that from the ceiling fan or the floor fan. I filled up the reservoir and soaked the aspen mats a couple of times which provided a brief amount of evaporative cooling. The aspen mats soon dry without the constant flow of water which is where the pump comes in. At least the air flow is helpful.

There have been some noises off due to the arrival of weekend visitors. I heard someone [probably Bona] cleaning one of the nearby tents so there may be some closer neighbours tonight. I will go out into the camping later should the need arise. Before dealing with the swimming pool I collected up the poo so that any visitors would not be put off.

Hot and sunny again
