Washing day

I watched a gritty French police film set in Paris. Plenty of intrigue and some misconduct and corruption.

Chillier with a gentle northerly breeze first thing so our walk was brisk and we were back well before seven. Charlie had a flashing collar which I unfortunately omitted to charge so his flashing was a little difficult to see especially as he’s somewhat fluffy. He kept up well as did all of them. Two motorhomes and a selection of smaller transport options were parked in the beach car park. I noticed another had joined them when I went for a swim later.

Once back at the van I put a load of washing in the machine as it’s been a while. I’ve been wearing summer shorts and a t-shirt recently but have regressed back to heavier clothes as it’s cooler. I was pleased I had when I went out on my bike.

I’d failed to check the sourdough starter the previous evening but it had suffered a similar fate to the previous couple and had a layer of unwelcome growth on the surface. Somehow, these are getting contaminated so I emptied and washed the jars and consigned them to the glass recycling bin. I put another jar in the Instant Pot to steam for a while. This usually gets rid of any foreign bodies. I’m starting from some rye flour and not Frank’s dried sourdough starter this time so we’ll see how things turn out in a day or so.

I went up the mountain and back through Paleochora. There is still work on the cycle and pedestrian path. The workers have put down a smooth concrete screed and are now topping it with what appears to be a plastic granular finish. It seems very labour-intensive and I remarked that the operatives were wearing hi-vis vests! Not such a common sight around here.

I removed my washing and hung it up before feeding the dogs and replenishing their food. The cats were hanging around too even though I put down food for them at 05:00. They start to eat more as soon as the temperature changes. There’s a black interloper which is unsettling the status-quo. I finally ejected the invader to restore some calm. We seem to have around a dozen cats at present plus the occasional ‘visitor’.

Kirsti had a load of washing to put on so I dealt with that in between other tasks. There was a small IT request which took very little time. The overcast sky transformed to be sunny and clear so I found a chunk of the day disappeared.

I washed the spinach I bought at the supermarket on Saturday having forgotten it a couple of times. I also made up some fakes for a change. I eat beans and lentils more often when it’s cooler.

I caught up and cut my hair then went for a quick swim and a shower to rid myself of the hair clippings. The dogs were mostly quiet as it was so warm. Bona’s kids were kicking a football around so I guess she must have come in to do some cleaning. She probably realises Georgia will be back again tomorrow. Georgia has to deal with the water company which stuffed a disconnection notice into the mailbox yesterday morning. I scanned and sent it to Maria as I had no clue what it was about. Georgia contacted me later as Manolis needed to send her a ten-page document and he has no scanner. He came to the the office from the filling station. The document had been around a bit so kept jamming the auto feeder and had to be done manually in the end. It was Manolis who told me the other document was a disconnection notice. I understood that the water problems were a thing of the the past so this might have been an oversight on somebody’s part.

I’ve been busy putting laundry away and making my bed. There are still some items on the line.

The Covid map has an additional colour setting which provides more granular information. I note that the west and east of the Island are yellow but Iraklion and Rethymno are both amber. There is still a lot of red in Northern Greece.

The summer weather is coming to an end as I see minimum temperatures of 11ºC coming up as well as the possibility of a little rain after the weekend.

Still a good temperature despite the chilly breeze and plenty of sunshine once the afternoon got going. I stood chatting with a customer on the beach after my swim so it wasn’t cold.
