Wonky Weather

Isabella needed to stretch her legs at 04:45 so I didn’t see the point in going back to bed. She took Skinny to play with once she’d completed the original operation to her satisfaction. I contented myself with getting dressed and ready for the Early Walk.

I was aware it wouldn’t be too warm since there was no time during the night when I felt even vaguely overheated. There was no wind and a clear easterly sky as we set off across the field around 05:10. Venus was high in the sky and clearer than the day before. I walked briskly towards the rocks pursued by a plethora of flashing lights of various colours. It was dark enough to require a torch for certain sections of the journey. Only Charlie and Luis failed to report for the first stop so we continued over the rocks without them. Only Skinny failed to turn up at the second and all of them eventually arrived when we were by the river. With continuing rainy days, I suspect it will be a while before we’re able to make it to Plakaki. That didn’t stop Skinny who I could see darting around in the distance. He was well ahead all of the way up the beach but caught up very quickly on the return.

The sky was starting to look quite unstable so we hastened back to the camping once we’d crossed the rocks in the other direction. There had been a number of distant flashes so I knew there was something brewing. We hadn’t been back long when there was a loud hailstorm which lasted for around five minutes and disturbed Isabella’s composure as she decided she wished to join the others inside the van. I made tea after feeding the pussies then sat down to fiddle with one of the tills at Inter Sport. I then completed my mental tasks and took Isabella out with her ball. Following the previous evening’s overindulgence in ball retrieval, she hung onto her ball not giving it to me once. It was now sunny so the day was starting to warm up.

Having replenished my stock of oranges and bananas, I was delighted to sit down in the sun for a little breakfast and information absorption from YouTube and the like. It was quite sunny at times so it’s possible I may have lost concentration at some point.

Later, the postman arrived with a bicycle chain for Frank so I wandered down to drop it to him and chew the fat for a few minutes until the next shower arrived. Work was continuing on the shading for the new static vans with lots of welding and cutting. Apparently, the concrete technicians who constructed the little house over the personholes and poo tank pumps have turned their attention to constructing a wall to prevent the car park from falling into the westerly neighbours’ driveway. Having moved their northern boundary back to accommodate the cycleway/footpath they are probably keen not to have the camping slide into their property. I saw shuttering earlier and a large lorry delivered a huge pile of ballast and cement yesterday. They will doubtless move their mixer up to the car park opposite reception to carry out the work.

I contemplated a ride into Paleochora until the wind got up and the showers became more unpredictable. I consoled myself with wandering the camping a few times and taking the dogs out for a walk nearer to sunset.

The weather is set to remain unsettled for a few days with a minimum of 5ºC each day until Saturday when it’s 6ºC. More showers and wonky weather I suspect. Things should warm up a little after the weekend.

I was besieged by a number of texts from Cosmote on Sunday but wasn’t really paying attention. I have a pay-as-you-go monthly phone SIM. The Telcos are still competing to maximise revenue from their customers so offer a cornucopia of different packages to their customers including two DIY packages. My aim is to spend no more than 10€/month on telecoms as I make few calls but need to have mobile data for when I’m away from the camping. Due to my indolence and failure to heed the messages [in Greek] from Cosmote, I found myself with no texts. The game is that, to retain the accumulated texts, minutes and data, it’s necessary to top up with a minimum of 10€ before the previous month’s top-up runs out. That way you keep your existing minutes/GB/SMS and add to it. I wasn’t paying attention so failed to tailor my DIY package to include SMS, so my amassed quota disappeared leaving me no SMS. I don’t care much about talk time even though calls have a minimum duration of three minutes. In the end, I decided to purchase another DIY package as these work out better value than the individual SMS/Data/talk packages. I remember the times in UK before nearly everyone had unlimited talk and SMS as well as data on some accounts. The Greek telcos will eventually evolve in the same way no doubt.

We enjoyed a blustery walk on the Promontory with Isabella two-balls performing the same feat as yesterday. She wallowed in the lagoon and has hopefully dried off a little at least.

Not very warm with occasional showers although better than forecast. No change tomorrow but hopefully warming up after the weekend by which time Janne and Erica will be back in Stockholm.
