An Idle Day

The night passed quickly with few interruptions. I was awake before the alarm so had feet on the floor when it went off. We were out the gate soon after into a moonlit field. Far more vehicles and tents decorated the track along the beach and a pickup with a young couple had not long arrived. There was plenty of chuckling from within. Quite the romantic to be overlooking the sea at 05:15 on a Sunday morning.

It was however cooler so I put on my shirt as we approached the rocks to cross for the first time. It was possible to see without a torch so that was around my neck. We were soon walking towards Plakaki with Isabella visiting the various tents and vehicles parked on the road. Some had their own dogs so there might have been a little defensive barking but none from my lot. Things have definitely changed since the old days as there’s no way I would have allowed the dogs to wander freely on the beach with so much temptation in the form of unknown dogs, tents, vans and maggots. It would have been mayhem. Now they just wander along almost oblivious to external interference.

It was only returning from Plakaki I saw the maggot in the middle of the beach. It was much darker when we walked up but I must have virtually fallen over it. No interest shown by the dogs though. Only Sasha had something to say when she clapped eyes on the cruiser moored just off the beach. She didn’t see it on the way up due to the darkness but now she had, it became a threat. What the eye don’t see…

There was little activity on the Promontory on the second trip around. A couple packing up near the entrance and a small tent on the beach but otherwise void of obvious FreeLoaders. Strange for a Holiday Weekend.

As we neared the field, a couple with their own two dogs enticed the smaller dogs over to them but I was watching from afar in case of any problems. The dogs eventually wandered off of their own accord so I didn’t have to intervene. We were back around seven so I immediately left with the girls and the thrower, not that I needed it as Isabella was otherwise occupied. There was still limited activity so it seemed quite a quick walk.

I jumped on my bike and rode up to the top of the mountain where I passed Kostas with another man and some dogs. Presumably hunting. We exchanged a few words but I was puffing my way up. I found the man with the Husky at the top. We agreed that it was hot and humid and I mentioned the limited breeze before rushing off back down avoiding the dogs on the way. The ferry hadn’t sailed so I went to the bakery for a couple of spinach pies for Bona and then to Petrakis for 20kg of biscuits and some DD bits. I was assured no one was working at the warehouse either today or tomorrow so delivery might take a while. Maria informed me that the food was at the reception as I waited for my meal at the kitchen this evening.

My ride back to the camping was interrupted by another visit to Alonaki where there was activity commensurate with the time of the year. Mostly from the residents but there were other arrivals. The sea had been calm but it became rougher. I wasn’t really concentrating so found myself almost out as far as the buoys. I swam back to the beach, dried off in the sun then rode back to the camping.

The doggies were quiet and the girls pleased to see me as I unloaded the shopping. I made tea and sat a while before letting them all out and feeding them. I could feel an idle day coming on but got the DDs on the go before relaxing. I declined an invitation to cruise stating stuff to be done. I wrote some emails and fiddled with servers before moving onto more interesting things. Francesco and his wife managed to get the boat and it’s accessories to the sea so they left heading west bound, as I discovered later, for Krios. I’m definitely glad I declined their offer as Krios turned out to be their final destination where they stayed for three hours eating and chilling out before returning to Grammeno. I would have been bored stiff and it would have been a day wasted. Apparently, Francesco’s family are not terribly adventurous. Perhaps it would have been different had I’d been there…

Noisy, sometimes accompanied by a little fiend, came to visit the dogs and particularly Sasha, at least three times today. I went to the gate the first time and we communed but I didn’t bother after that. The dogs are getting used to him so make little fuss when he appears. He’s used to Isabella now although initially concerned about her size and the possibility of her eating him I presume. I’ve warned her about small boys as they can stick in the throat.

The evening, and soon the night are upon us. Tomorrow is the big day.

Francesco was asking if Amazon Prime worked in Greece as he wants to get a bigger outboard for his boat. I suggested ten days might be the minimum delivery time. He’s having fun so I shouldn’t spoil his dreams.

Cooler and less windy than yesterday but pleasantly hot. Tomorrow promises to be about the same.
