St Christophe(r)

The night was sweaty even though the fan was running from bedtime. We went out to an almost empty beach but there were a few cars in the car park. We later found a couple of tents scattered about the Promontory but no signs of real life as we know it. There were no excitements so the boys were back in the van just after seven.

Isabella didn’t find her ball so I uselessly carried the thrower around. She even lost interest in finding one of the many other balls scattered far and wide. On the way back we stumbled upon a man with small boy who was slightly apprehensive of Isabella due to their relative sizes and her exuberance. They’d been at the camping around Easter and could remember the departure of Charlie. More than I could remember of them, unfortunately but they all tend to blend and blur. Isabella quickly made friends with the small boy whose name was Johannes. Something to do with their mother being German and he being bilingual. He now is more confident around dogs and has been wanting one of their own for sometime. Their lifestyle precludes it unfortunately. I suggested they might consider one of the dog-sharing options. We discussed a number of subjects including turtles and the likelihood of an egg making it to adulthood. They were leaving later so needed to go pack up their stuff. It was somewhat later by the time I deposited Isabella and Sasha before going off to ride my bike.

I went up the mountain then stopped at EKO to pick up some more printed forms which Manolis had done for Maria. I had a quick stop for a loaf and then back to the camping. This time the mother and same small boy were in the car park so I managed to complete the circle and say hi to everyone. There is also a smaller creature who is still at the sucking and nappy stage and likes rental car keys. Plenty of interesting and varied bacteria there.

I’d not long been back when Maria called to tell me the man with the laptop was in reception wishing to show me it wasn’t working. I fiddled around then decided to look at it in my own time so told him it would be a couple of hours. It ended up being more like four hours as it developed into one of those interesting ‘me or it’ battles and it was quite addictive in the end. I thought I had it under control however it worked only briefly once I’d returned it to the owner. I suspect it may have been something to do with the WiFi at the bar as I discovered later.

I went back to configure Georgia’s phone to access the cameras directly then got some food from the kitchen. By this time I was feeling a little ragged but had a quick chat with the French to discover today is St Christopher’s day. Her husband is Christophe.

I sat down whilst my food reheated and watched interesting content not having the energy for much else. The dogs obligingly remained reasonably quiet even thought ‘that time of day’ was approaching.

The camping is still very busy as the kitchen can confirm due to the amount of meals served. There are still plenty of tents, cars in the car park and people on the beach.

Manolis told me, when I was at EKO this morning, that the Official Visitors had been to Houmas where they found four people with insufficient paperwork. I wonder if there’s a special discount for quantity. If they’re paying 10,500€ a hit, that’s going to knock a big hole in your profit!

I eventually got to munch on a huge vat of green beans and potatoes which will probably keep me going for a week.

I got fed up with the intermittent Internet connection so went to the office to restart things. In the end, it appeared to be the switch which was causing the problem. Fortunately, I have a spare so swapped out the faulty one. It’s one of the two or three 16 port Netgear switches I bought when I first set everything up. They were not new then! The cheap Chinese ones are quite good value so long as you have a couple in hand for when the PSU gives up or they develop a dodgy port or two. At 35€ a hit, it doesn’t matter much. I ordered a new circuit board for the CCTV as well as a 10TB hard disk which Sascha should bring from Germany when he comes in September.

Unstable weather forecast for the next few days with a 50% possibility of rain and thunderstorms! Wot, rain in August!
