Thanksgiving

I watched a very interesting first part of a German film about Berlin in 1945. Things didn’t seem so bad at New Year’s but the intensity of air raids increased so it became difficult to ignore the way things were going. Some of the concentration camps were discovered and freed but, so far, Adolf is still in the game although sounding frailer. I watched the first episode of a BBC series about a young, female doctor who decides to move to India after things start to go wrong for her in UK. She thinks she’s signing up for a private clinic but finds herself assigned to a public hospital in a small community. She begins to learn there is more to medicine than perhaps she learned at medical school and during her internship. So far, the series is looking promising.

I was woken at two by Isabella wanting to go out. She was joined by Sasha and Skinny who came back quite promptly however Isabella remained outside until getting up time as I went back to bed and sleep. Maya seems happy with the large dog bed which is really only just large enough for the girls. To think that Oskar, Luis and Fido have been in it together in the past.

The morning was mild and windy. The stars and planets were a little fuzzy due to moisture but it was certainly not cold. The Woolley Mammoths and their owners have left so the Setra has moved into the car park with the remaining two vans. There were no vans on the beach track for the first time in quite a while.

We completed the first walk with the correct number of dogs returning almost simultaneously other than Oskar, who was a little late.

I took the girls, chaperoned by Skinny, for another trip to Azzuro once more. We skirted around the dead goat washed up on the shore. This caused some excitement earlier too.

We didn’t go over the rocks a second time as I was keen to get back to avoid any chance of delays at the rockfall. I left the girls to snooze, picked up a loaf from Anatoli and returned avoiding any delay.

I dropped off to Lucy then went back to feed the dogs and complete the preparation of the DDs and into the pot.

The remainder of the morning passed harmlessly playing with Barbara’s website and sending a couple of emails with various questions.

The couple who arrived yesterday and did two loads of washed announced their departure as expected. They are returning to the mainland at the weekend and then back to Germany. I’d commented on their beans earlier so they asked me to bring a container so they could leave me some. So this evening is rice and beans in tomato sauce. Nice to not have to cook for myself tonight. We chatted a while about oil and food generally and there may be some potential additions to the whole food, plant-based fraternity.

The Canadian woman with her bike set off for Omalos with Manolis in his taxi. Her husband rode there on his bike sans luggage which went with her. Apparently, they were unaware Crete was so mountainous she confided as she waited for the taxi. They are going back home fairly soon.

The dogs waited impatiently for me to return as it was necessary for me to tell them more than once to shut up. I stopped to talk to the French couple and Jamie came to remind me he’d be paying his final instalment tomorrow.

I was walking past T5 when Georgia and Zoe approached with food for Maria who, it transpired, has CoVID. Georgia retreated rapidly, as any good hypochondriac should, but I stayed a little to talk to Maria at a suitable distance in the open air. She managed to avoid the plague when it was raging even though half of the school where she was teaching went down with it! Now it’s all but history, she contracts a dose.

I processed the DDs and fed the dogs who are now flaked out sleeping it off, Luis with his head on my right foot as I write from inside the van. It’s dark and cool outside but my beans and rice are ready which is indeed a bonus.

Cooler than yesterday after a mild but windy start. Plenty of sunshine as the day progressed. Tomorrow should be fine however Saturday is still forecast to be quite wet.
