A new addition to the family

Not another dog but a plant! Sascha, Steffie, Benjamin and Marie are travelling back home today so have had to leave their geraniums behind. It can get a little windy during the winter and it might not rain as much as they need, so I volunteered to plant-sit until they return next. Benjamin carried the large pot down to my compound and now it sits next to the table, sheltered behind the van.

It was windy earlier and gusted to around 57km/h as we walked back from the Promontory around 07:30. The sand was swirling and the dogs were scatty but we made it back without too much ado. For a change, I left all the dogs except Boris and Obi in the SDC. Princess used to escape by climbing over the fence from the roof of one of the houses. Now that the houses are located at the southern end of the compound, it is no longer an option. She seemed content to be there anyway and gave her less reason to bark at things outside the gate. Obi is very happy to be the only dog in the main compound, however, I’ve not seen much of him since Marie was here this morning. He’s such a tart when anyone comes! The others barked initially until they recalled that it was Marie and even Oskar came up to greet her.

I checked Obi over as he had some matted hair behind both of his ears. I’ve been trying to get to it to cut it out but Obi has been less than enthusiastic each time he’s seen me with a pair of scissors in my hand. This morning he came to me and I removed one of the matted areas. The other, I discovered, was not matted fur as I thought, but some kind of skin growth. Dave needs a checkup at the vet soon so I’ll take them both in so Antonis and I can have a morning in Chania. Perhaps we’ll need to visit the nice shop with all those lovely tools.

I received some new shoes from China yesterday and have unpacked them. Those of you who like a challenge can play a game to spot which pair is the new one. No prizes are offered.

If you manage to spot which pair is the old one, you’ll agree that there is still plenty of life left in them. I bought them last summer and started using them for dog walking over the Promontory around February, so I don’t believe they’ve done badly.

I’ve done a little more work on the Adoption website although have not made as much progress as I would have liked. Here is the link to the pages. Click the picture of the dog to see their profile.

Tony, Ursula and Heidi are no longer in Italy as they are now on the ANEK ferry from Ancona to Patras in Greece. They should arrive in Patras tomorrow and then most of the driving is out of the way. Just a three hour run to Rafina and then to the ferry for Crete early in September. It seems that Heidi has been an excellent traveller and has been welcomed in each location they stayed. She is also sleeping in the cabin on the ferry but don’t tell anyone as it’s not allowed! Shhhhhh!

It has not been as windy as I feared it might have been today and I think the awning can go up again in the morning. The top temperature today was 33.5C, the dogs have been in the shade of the carobs and so have I. The easterly wind is now cool but not as cool as the northerly wind this morning. It was almost fleece conditions at 06:00!

I’ve not looked around the camping much today but suspect more people will leave during the weekend. Most Greeks will be back at work on Monday and the school holidays will end in a couple of weeks.

Having been told that my sail shade was lost yesterday, I checked the Parcel Force website again just now. Lo and behold, as if by magic, the item has reappeared in Athens. So maybe it will be with me soon after all…

There are dogs marching up and down with placards so I’d better give them some food.
