Another No-Power Day

The last day of August 2018 dawned warm and dry although I felt the dogs lacked enthusiasm. Even Luis was a little subdued when I went to extract him from his cage in the storeroom. He was wearing an e-collar having woken me around 01:00 to enjoy a little barking spree. I understood this morning why he was barking, but that’s not the point.

We walked and they loafed mainly on the sand. Charlie and Oskar fooled around a bit. I didn’t even bother to get a ball out of my pocket but concentrated on using the time for a few stretches and a little shoulder therapy. We moved on, over the rocks, and got back at about the normal time. Luis is still struggling with his rear leg but I cannot see what is the problem and notice he puts it to the ground when he forgets about it. I suspect it’s not terminal and he will recover in due course.

Xanthippos was just firing up the Grammeno Ferarri II as I wandered out of the gate. He regaled me with his account of a brawl around midnight resulting in a bloody nose, black eye and ejection from the camping. That is the gist as some of the finer points were lost in translation.

I showered in the main bathroom due to the wind: whereupon a disembodied voice said, ‘Καλημαιρα Chris’. I think I’m the only person who leaves their shoes outside the shower cubicle so it’s not rocket science to establish who is within! Olivia was sweeping out the toilets prior to mopping them. Why all the customers think it’s acceptable to tramp dirt and sand into the bathrooms I will never understand: into the shower cubicles is even less understandable.

More activity at the top of the area opposite me indicated the impending departure of the group which has occupied a large pitch under the trees. People like it there, oblivious to the fact that a huge cesspool is only a few metres away underground. It will be interesting to see if we get an influx of Greek campers this afternoon or tomorrow. If not, it will confirm that the main season is officially over and that life will hopefully return to a normal state.

Returning from Paleochora, I could hear the generator in the workshop powering the cesspool pump and soon after, another was started up to keep the kitchen appliances operational. No one mentioned that there was going to be yet another planned outage this week! What is going on? Solar power and battery banks are becoming more attractive by the day!

After a blustery start and a windy ride into town, the mid-day is calm and virtually still. It is warm under the canopy but a lot less warm than previously in the days of the fabric awning. The canopy can do nothing to change the air temperature but nicely prevents direct radiation from the sun. It will be even better once I can get the sun blockers up as they will reduce the amount of sun striking the decking outside the canopy. I will have the correct awning rail once Ursula and Tony arrive on Wednesday. It will then be a matter of purchasing some screws and fixing the rail to the underside of the long box section at the front of the canopy. All be revealed in a photo once it’s all done.

A gentle sea breeze is now wafting the aroma of petrol fumes from the kitchen generator as it sputters away in the open. I can hear the engine note change as appliances are switched on and load increases. It must be a joyful experience for those nearby. I am shielded by a fence, trees and a couple of buildings so it must be lovely for everyone else! Hopefully, if it’s the same as Monday, power will resume around 15:00.

Incidentally, I was oblivious to the fact that last Monday was a UK Bank Holiday.

The power cut lasted from 09:05 to 15:45. I hope they used the opportunity well.
