Fairly straightforward really

Some plonker let off a loud firework of some description which awakened all but the dead on the camping. As expected, every dog in Grammeno, Kountoura and Paleochora was barking loudly. The pyrotechnic outburst lasted probably less than one minute and, having settled the dogs, I was asleep again almost immediately.

There was a cool wind at 04:30 as we plodded up the Promontory. I’d spotted two cars in the car park so guessed the couple with the dogs was still in residence. So as to avoid any potential conflict, I restricted our activities to the east side of the Promontory and attached the non-participating dogs in the large sandy area as of old. Skinny alerted me to the other FreeLoaders by means of a discreet woof. There was a small dome tent amongst the trees on the shoreline. By means of some minor diversions, we were able to complete our morning routine satisfactorily. Skinny and SMD went out next and we did one circuit of the Promontory but then took a walk down Alonáki Beach for a couple of km just for a change. One reason for going that way was so that I could check out the huge Swiss-registered American motorhome parked down that way. It must have been very interesting driving a vehicle of that size on the roads in Crete especially bearing in mind the rear overhand – the distance between the rear axles and the end of the vehicle. A large overhang presents problems with excessive swing when making tight turns. It was an impressive device.

I dropped Skinny and SBD back to the camping then set off in the car to Spaniakos so that I could take photos of the work completed the previous by Antonis and BullDozer Man. There is not generally much going on in Spaniakos as it’s not the hub of the universe. There was even less going on at 08:00 on a Sunday morning. I spent about thirty minutes taking photos and then headed back to the camping to share them and send an email to Sascha. There is now an entrance to the site and there should be no problem getting the caravan in with room to spare.

The dogs were still quiet when I got back although my recording picked up a three-minute solo by Luis at around 08:30. Naughty Luis, waking the neighbours at 08:30! I got on with writing an email to Sascha as my breakfast prepared itself in the Instant Pot. I’m not too sure where the morning went and, as for the afternoon… I did find time in my busy schedule to cut my hair and have a shower. The first shower I’ve had in a number of days. I just rinse the sand off my legs with a hose when I’ve been in the sea and it’s not been hot enough to warrant a shower at bedtime. I used the red showers as the refurbished ones are incredibly hot when the sun is out. This will be a real bonus in winter!

It’s become windier as the day has progressed and a peek at the wind forecast shows it’s likely to be windy all week. I don’t mind that as it makes it appear cooler. It’s a bit uncomfortable for tent-dwellers as all that flapping must be pretty annoying. Not having a fabric awning, I don’t suffer that problem now.
