And still it goes on…

I was awake a few times in the night because it was so hot. The temperature from midnight until 04:30 was mostly around 29℃. If I’d been bothered to get out of bed I could have used the fan to cool me down. It was windy at 04:30 so getting the dogs ready was easier. When it’s deadly silent, every sound seems so loud and with customers right up against the north fence I don’t want to wake them so early. We were soon off and across the field and then up the road towards the Promontory. There were headlights in the car park so I thought it might be Kostas leaving early but it turned out to be someone else in a car. Quite what they were doing in Grammeno Beach car park at 04:50 is a mystery but I’m certain there is a logical explanation.

The bunch were pretty lethargic today, probably due to the heat. I’d done the shopping yesterday so there was no reason to hurry as I wasn’t going anywhere. SBD was particularly energetic as all he wanted to do was play with me or the other dogs. Even Skinny, who usually has boundless energy was not as enthusiastic as usual. We reverted to the 2x 2x 1 routine followed by a free run over the rocks where Fido and Luis went for an enjoyable swim in one of Kostas’ conveniently filled rock depressions. I’m sure providing a swimming facility for dogs is not foremost in Kostas’ mind when he’s pumping the water around the rock pools. We had our biscuits then headed for the Big Beach where I went for a swim out towards the island which is nearer to the Small Beach. The wind was still quite strong but the water appeared calm enough at the start. As I swam towards the island, watched by the dogs who were tied to trees, the wind got up and the waves became ferocious. The combined force of the wind and waves was pushing me towards the Small Beach so I was unlikely to end up in Libya. As I moved out of the shelter of the bay, the waves became stronger so I decided to retreat since it was becoming less like fun by the moment.

I headed back towards the dogs who appeared to be becoming a little agitated. Probably wondering who might feed them if I were to be carried off to Libya. I put on my T-shirt and tried to find one of my socks which had either been blown away by the wind or become part of Skinny’s excavation project. We walked back to the camping and I made some breakfast after watering the plants. The dogs were released into their daytime locations as there is already enough sand in the van.

A relaxation period followed breakfast then it was time for my weekly phone home. I wandered out to the loo at one point to find a coil of cable which disappeared down a cable duct outside the door of the workshop. The metal cover to the access chamber had been tossed aside, the cable in a tangled heap. No attempt was made to make the worksite safe. I’ve been here long enough not to let these things concern me but Health and Safety would have a meltdown if here. The camping is at the height of the summer season which begs the question as to why this work is in progress.

Despite all the faffing about, the power still regularly goes off. Not for more than a few minutes, but it’s annoying nonetheless. The other morning, I was wondering why my porridge was taking so long to cook. On closer inspection, I found the Instant Pot had reset itself due to the power dropping out. Being a failsafe device it simply resets to a power-off condition if there’s a break in the supply. I’ve given up using my water purifier as that’s another device which just switches itself off.

My spinach for later is sitting in a large bowl by the clothes washing sinks by the loos. The sun conveniently heats the water pipes which serve my area but the pipes to the sinks and loos run underground so the water is less warm. I shall take the dogs for their Evening walk when it cools down and try to leave my supper in the Instant Pot to cook in my absence.

The Instant Pot managed to cook my food without interruption. There was no Internet earlier although I had power so I went to investigate. All the gubbins in the storeroom was still working because I have a UPS battery backup but then I had power anyway. I discovered there was no power in the Central Kitchen so investigated. One of the fridges was faulty which was tripping the main fuse for the building. I isolated the fridge and restored power to the remainder. Speaking to Maria, there is a problem with the main fuse by the camping entrance. This is the switch where all of the power for the camping comes in. It involves Maria walking to the gate from the reception office each time it trips out and resetting it. Sometimes it trips every few minutes. Very good exercise for Maria. I think this needs fixing by ΔΕΗ the national electric company.

Out on the Promontory just now, we were approached by a guy who asked if I’d seen a German Shepherd roaming around. I told him I hadn’t so he explained that one had come to where his family are by the beach. He has a dog too and the Shepherd had a go at his dog and frightened the children. I know a couple of people with Shepherds but I think their dogs are not allowed to wander off. A Shepherd is a large dog to have out and about on its own. I said I’d keep a lookout for it.

High today of 37.8℃ which is quite hot. I may have the fan on tonight when I go to bed.
