Skinny Weather

The forecast mentioned the possibility of rain between five and six but it’s sometimes wrong so I got up anyway and dressed. I’d let the Crazies out who now wanted to come back in. Isabella at least – she’s never satisfied! I finally went out to put on my boots and ready the two girls when I head the light patter of raindrops on the roof above me. The drops turned into something more persistent so I let all of the dogs out for a wee and we returned to bed.

Just before seven, I could see it was starting to get light and the rain appeared to have stopped. Another look at the forecast indicated it should be safe to surface so I got them out and off we went.

It was cooler but light as we were much later than usual. It was great to be walking towards Plakaki and be able to see the dogs rather than a disembodied flashing light in the distance. Luis made it to Plakaki for biscuits and we set off back down the beach.

Oskar decided he might investigate the sheep in the unfenced field and started to head their way soon to be accompanied by Isabella and Sasha. They received a smart reminder that sheep-chasing was not on the menu and we continued for the second round of the Promontory where we me Andreas with his dogs. This time, he was heading back but decided to join us for another wander around. We parted just as we crossed the field and back to the van where I deposited the boys. There was no time for another walk as I wanted to go into Paleochora to get some bread and ride my bike.

The trip in was easy as there was little wind so I went over Panorama and the usual route stopping at the periptero to see if they’d received my money. I gave my phone number so they could call once it finally arrived. Next was the bakery and I resisted the desire to visit Petrakis and rode back instead. I could see stacking clouds in the distance and knew we were into some rain and unsettled weather until Saturday at least.

Xanthippos has asked me to leave the workshop unlocked so he could get things to clear the gutters of T1-5. He was just getting started as I arrived. I went and fed the dogs then looked at the various cabins to see if any water had penetrated. Xanthippos spent time on the phone with Georgia and I sloped off.

The day has been a mixture of sun and cloudy periods with some quite heavy showers and thunder. I was in with Jorma, Kirsti and Fido giving Jorma the 5kg welding wire the ACS courier delivered to the camping. This saved the bother of me riding to Anatoli in Kountoura in the rain later. I left when the rain began as my bike was uncovered.

Kirsti came for Isabella so I took Sasha and we met up as usual. By this time there was beautiful sunshine but the clouds from the previous storm were marching east and the next batch lurking to the west. This was to be the status for hours to come as I could see from the various satellite maps.

Andrea, Frank’s Italian friend, intercepted me to pay 200€ for the camping and ask for the washing machine. I warned him of the unstable weather but he was unconcerned.

Another storm passed with quite a loud and near strike which I later discovered took out some of the ports on the kitchen switch and the one in the wall box. There seems to be something about that stretch of overhead cable. I’m going to need to buy some more switches. Perhaps some cheap, sacrificial ones or very expensive lightning-resistant ones.

I put on the doggy rice and some food for me then went on a switch changing mission. There are no spare switches so I’ll need to buy some new ones. I disconnected the kitchen WiFi for now but will moves things around in the morning.

Rain early morning at walk time followed by some quite lengthy sunny intervals to a mostly cloudy, stormy and thundery day. The outlook is unsettled for several days.
