Crete today

We had a sunny day today with hardly a cloud in the sky. It is not warm because of the cold north wind which luckily is nothing like as strong as it yesterday and the day before. I’ve been practising my French today as we have a French couple with a motorhome on-site as I mentioned yesterday. We walked along the coast together when I went out with the dogs this evening. I seem to be doing a lot of French at the moment.

Earlier I got two new rolls of toilet paper for the gents from the stock store. I thought as we had visitors, we should make an effort: and we also have lots of hot water due to the sun. The French guy is retired and goes abroad during the winter in search of the sun. Like the German couple last week, it is his first time on Crete and in Greece. He is not as scathing as the German who commented that there is no infrastructure and couldn’t see how you are supposed to walk by the road without a pavement, and why the beaches are littered with plastic bottles when there are so many unemployed in Greece. I didn’t bother to tell him that his expectations are way over the top and that comparing Germany to Greece is rather unfair. I could have mentioned that most of urban Germany was reduced to rubble in the 40s and rebuilt with help from the rest of europe and the USA. The French guy just said “He’s German, what do you expect?” You can possibly understand the Greek sentiments when confronted with such comments.

Another beautiful sunset is just drawing to a close. This evening I am going to have a TV evening having downloaded The Paradise and Last Tango in Halifax. I watched Montalbano, the last of the series, which I thought was very good. That series is a few years further down the line and ties up some loose ends from the first series.

I had a long chat with Terry this morning having told him off the other day for trying to do too much. He seems to be getting on well and accepts that it may take him a little while before he is back to normal.

Both dogs are snoring following our longer walk so I’m going to settle down with Last Tango.

Later…

Just a quickie, as the actress must have said to the bishop.

Taking Dave on his evening perambulation I have to pass out of the gate onto the beach. This evening there was just an amazing sky with the first quarter of the moon and whatever planet sits in the southwest and is very bright. The sky was completely clear, so much so that it was possible to make out the form of the entire moon, not just the quarter which was reflecting the sun’s rays. I remember being on Kithera with Danny and the two Dutch teenagers we met in Tolo, spending almost the entire night watching the moon traverse the sky. We couldn’t find a camping on the first night so we slept in a churchyard. The boys were useless and frightened of ghosts! I decided to leave them to it and went off for a couple of days for a bit of peace and quiet. I went back to the same location and hardly slept a wink all night just watching the full moon.

I’ve been catching up this evening with Paradise and Last Tango. It’s all happening in both and next week’s instalments look good too.
So there you have it – still chilly, but we are adapting…
