King of the castle

Maria came to give me some keys this afternoon. Only one week later than she said she would. Apparently, they would have left sooner but the road from here to Chania has been closed for two days due to snow and ice. They say they will be back “in a few days”. Maria had put on the water heater earlier so I was able to have a boiling shower – two days in a row now! I went straight to the office to remove the stinky ashtrays and change over the notice in the window with contact telephone numbers. Better to have people call me from the office than have to keep looking out for them. I can now use the washing machine and get rid of the piles of washing I have been saving up. Maria said that there were no other items for me at the office as she gave me the calendar. I mentioned that the other parcels had been collected from the post office.

The German couple who arrived yesterday decided to stay another night and we chatted this morning when I took Dave for a quick walk on the beach. They have a pickup with a caravan on the back as well as a motorbike. They are quite old, maybe seventies, but seem game for anything.
This evening there was another German couple walking on the promontory. They were mobbed by the Small Dogs until I arrived. We chatted for about 30 minutes but they had to go as they were walking back to Paleochora. I explained that they had endured the worst period of weather I have encountered here in the past 3 years or so. They are staying another ten days before returning home.
I bought a switch to fix the central heating fan controller from the supermarket this morning. The original switch had broken and the one I replaced it with didn’t last long either. Boris is happy as now he can lay with his nose in the hot air vent and fry himself. The heater is much more efficient with the blower as otherwise all the heat goes up to the ceiling and you’re left with cold feet.
It was so cold last night I even left the heating on low all night. The minimum temperature was 3.1C. Dave, in his palatial residence, seemed to have survived alright and the Small Dogs which sleep outside were very quiet. I heard no unusual squeaks from them during the night and they seemed as bouncy as ever this morning.
It has been warm and sunny, which is a welcome break from the horrid weather we have had to endure recently. There is more rain forecast but I hope it stays away until I’m able to get all my washing done.
