Moving house

I was up and down like the proverbial undergarments in the night. It was hot at bedtime so I decided to sleep outside. The dogs were twitchy and there are tents quite near to the north fence. Not as close as the French children but, in some way, noisier. Snoring is the problem. I think it’s the snoring which might set them off. There is also a couple of blokes with a little terrier nearby and I suspect it was wandering about in the night. I know it wasn’t Micky or Five as I am assured the two of them were tucked up with Georgia. I woke up at 02:00 and moved inside to my bed. I was woken a couple of times but they shut up immediately. Just a couple of woofs but when the camping is full and there are people all around, woofing is not on the list. I got up before five as, this time Boris was complaining. Normally you hear nothing from him in the night unless it’s thundery or there really is something to be concerned about.

I got dressed and decided to give up and to take them out. We were on the Promontory before the getting up alarm at 05:30. It was dark but Boris was able to keep track of his ball despite the fact that it no longer flashes. My little posse included Minnie after she had an initial run about. There were FreeLoaders but we didn’t venture to the west side of the Promontory, sticking to the end and the rocks. The moon was well on its way and almost full. There was plenty of light from the moon despite nothing from the sun at that time. The moonlight on the sea, together with a warm breeze made for a very pleasant sensation as I sat on the rocks watching the dogs run around in the gloom.

The early morning was the coolest part of the day so it was good to be out there to make the most of it. Today’s high was nearly 40C again with an Under Awning Temperature of 44C. As I was writing this, I could hear Dave moving around outside digging up the sand in a vain attempt to find a cooler spot. I heard his panting changing to a more rasping sound so I brought him in to the SDC where he promptly put himself into the blue basin. I took the opportunity to spray him all over with one of the hoses and also to clean his eye. He remained in the blue basin for about ten minutes before climbing out to investigate the SDC.

As Janne and Erica are not back until New Year, I have moved all the houses in SDC to the south fence, further away from the punters in the main camping. It will get only more crowded as we head towards the Bank Holiday on Tuesday week, so they can be in a quieter location next to the empty caravan. Even if there are people on the south side, they will still be protected by the caravan with its chain all around.

There were problems with the Internet this morning so I was wandering about plugging myself in around the camping. The router in the office seems to be having problems with DHCP. DHCP is effectively a list of all the devices attached to the router. They are given a lease which allows them access for a certain time. When the lease expires, the device asks for a new one which will be granted so long as the number of connected devices has not reached the maximum allowed. I try to keep the leases short as there are so many customers coming and going but I could see this was making the network unstable so I have increased the lease time to nine days. The problem with a long lease is that someone might only come for one night but their phone or whatever will still have a lease long after the customer has left. If there are lots of customers with lots of phones, laptops and tablets, the number of leases my run out before the unused ones have expired. In the winter this is not a problem as there is hardly anyone here. In the summer it can be tricky. Restarting the router causes it to reissue all the leases so perhaps I will just restart it once every day. There are unlikely to be more than 190 laptops, phones or tablets in one day!

The electricity has been on an off too. Which is also annoying. Fortunately most of my software will still work offline and catch up when the connection returns. No electricity means no network or no Internet. Also no work.

Dave has returned to the storeroom to chill out and the other dogs have been fed. Despite the racket all around, they are quiet mostly resting on the decking or on the ground. A lot calmer than during the night. Let’s hope that my removals will lead to an uninterrupted night.
