Cabling

A large part of my day was taken up with replacing the network cable to Georgia’s house. The cable is barely one year old but was destroyed during the winter storms and high winds. I anticipated the job would take me about two hours but it took about four due to having to cut the trees. The first cable was run during the late afternoon when it was cooler. Today, I was working in the morning and it was much sunnier. I have replaced the cable so now the Internet is working properly in Georgia’s house. So long as she can get Internet access at the bar, reception and her house, she’s happy. I will need to make a point of adding this cable to my cable maintenance list. It’s a lot easier for me to spend 30 minutes trimming some branches than dissipating a morning and 60€ on replacing the cable. Xanthippos informs me he plans to increase the height of that cable and drastically trim the carob trees. Not before time in my view.

Xanthippos has been busy finishing off the work to the toilet cubicle floors. He came to borrow my electric screwdriver whist I was cabling. He’s made a good job of strengthening the floors and stopping water leaks from the toilet flush pipes. The floors were weak, the toilet pans moved making the flush pipes leak. The leaking water further rotted the wood etc… It’s good not to have to walk across the camping each time I wish to use the toilet.

I finished my cabling job in time to shower and change to go out to Anidri for lunch at the school house with Ursula and Tony. At the restaurant, we met up with Sascha and Steffi and also Janne and Erica. It’s the first time we’ve all been together for a meal. A party was just leaving as we arrived so we had the place almost to ourselves at one point. It was an enjoyable meal which came to just over €14 each including tip.

The dogs were reasonably behaved during our absence however they would not be annoying the neighbours since they were with us. I let Skinny out of his run then received a message from Ursula saying that she had ‘something of mine’. He’d only been out seconds and he managed to get out of the main compound. Tony discovered him behind T2. I put him back into his run then decided to let him out to see if I could see his escape route. He was very obliging and immediately climbed the northwest corner of the fence to pay a visit to my German neighbours. I went with a lead to reacquire Skinny, who gave himself up immediately. The neighbours were also feeding the cat which explained why she had been less persistent recently.

Sascha came over to inform me that he’d bought a plot of land in Spaniakos not far from Paleochora. It’s near the former school now used as a clinic by PAWS where Princess and Pea were neutered. The plot is 1,000m2 with a fine view of Paleochora some 5km to the south as the crow flies. He plans to move his caravan there once their present agreement ends. He’s been trying to negotiate a sensible arrangement with Georgia but came up against the same difficulties as I did in 2014. He bought the plot very quickly and is, unfortunately, flying back to Berlin tomorrow morning so will need to come back to make arrangements to provide access for his caravan before moving it. It’s a pleasant, quiet location with a wonderful view. It will require a little work as the land has fallen into decay. He and Steffi took me in their car to see the land and we bumped into Janne and Erica who’d also decided to check it out. I came back with Janne and Erica as I needed to walk the dogs and Sascha and Steffi needed to collect their rental car for the journey to Iraklion airport early tomorrow morning.

I met up with Ursula who’d been at the end of the Promontory for a little while. As no one was about, I let all of the dogs off the lead except Obi. Fido, Luis and Skinny played ball helped by Charlie, Heidi and Oskar. It’s difficult for the others to keep up with Skinny as he runs very well regardless of the terrain. The sun had set by the time we got back to the camping but we’d all had a good time. Interestingly, Skinny likes to jump the compound fence to go walkabout but stays in the camping and surrenders easily when someone approaches with a lead. Whilst out, he stays close by and was reluctant to go with Ursula and the other dogs when I stayed back waiting for Fido. Skinny’s in his run as his freedom has been curtailed.

It’s nearly 23:00 so I need to go to bed. I’ll post this before doing so.
