First rain of winter

We were out and about by 05:45 and marching down the Promontory. From the outset, Luis was dragging behind so I left him and the others tied to the tree route we used in the summer and walked round once with Skinny. I collected the others leaving Luis and Oskar, another slacker, behind whilst we completed the second lap. The whole contingent was present for the final lap and all, including Obi, were let off the lead. The only dog not to make it back was Skinny, as yesterday. Almost to the compound before distraction set in. Tomorrow he’ll not be let off as this is becoming annoying. He didn’t accompany me on the Bougatsa run to the bakery as he was nowhere to be seen when I was ready to go. Ursula brought him back as he’d dropped in on them deciding to snuggle up in bed with Tony. I went for a shower and then got on with my breakfast.

It was a cloudy start which became cloudier as time passed. It was dull early in the morning due to the clouds on the eastern horizon. The same applied in the evening due to the grey and black clouds on the western horizon. It became cooler. It looked like rain and then it did rain. Eleanor had departed to Paleochora with Ursula and Tony intending to visit the PAWS puppies as one of their activities. This was postponed due to inclement weather and she mentioned something about a chocolate crêpe in Vakakis.

The rain caused me to heap things on my bed to prevent them from getting wet and to rearrange my outside furniture out of the rain blown gently from the east. Only one of the tent sides is up although I may put up the east side tomorrow as the weather threatens to continue. At 17:00, Ursula and Tony braved the rain to come here for tea as Eleanor had spent the afternoon with me looking after Obi who’d make himself very comfortable on her lap. All of the dogs were either inside the van or had claimed one of the blankets I’d strewn underneath the awning area. Eleanor got some idea as to what it’s like here during the ‘rainy season’ although it was still somewhat warmer.

During the tea and cake break, we discussed the possibility of abandoning the proposed spinach, peas and rice evening opting for a more comfortable meal at Houmas restaurant. There are plenty of tables inside with plastic blinds to keep out the wind and rain. Also, no cooking or spinach-washing was required.

Eleanor and I chose a short break in the rain to walk the dogs over the Promontory meeting the nice Swiss lady briefly as we exited the field. It tried to rain whilst we were out but it was a fast pace so we got back in the dry. I quickly fed the dogs, put them inside and off we went to Houmas restaurant.

There were several tables occupied and still a reasonable choice of dishes. We’re approaching the end of the season so they are not running a full menu and by the evening some of the daily dishes are unavailable. We had an enjoyable meal but left promptly as the evening was grotty and some were keen to get to their beds. The staff at the restaurant are beginning to suffer from season fatigue so are also keen to not be hanging around as customers take all night to slurp their raki.

All except Luis was quiet when I got out of the car but I expect he only kicked off when he heard us arrive. I’m now out on the decking writing this blog between installing Microsoft Outlook on one of Inter Sport’s computers as I’m going to be moving all of their mail accounts over to the new server during the weekend. Such joys await me!
